Anyone at all is a LEADER

I was born with a mindset sticking in my head of “I am not a Leader, and I can not be one.” The reason behind this theory was that I thought I’m not good at it. But thinking deeper, I have never got a chance to enhance my leadership skills. Not that I don’t have the opportunity to do so, but I never want to get out of my comfort zone and accept the opportunity.

Eventually, this mindset and action had shifted after I got an offer from my school’s principal to participate in a workshop called Global Social Leader, GSL for short. It’s an opportunity for me to start to initiate my potential as a leader. The GSL workshop lasted for three days and a month of social challenges to make changes in the community or country. It was the best time spent in my life; I am not even trying to exaggerate.

The first minute of participating in the GSL zoom workshop was wild. Many international students who have a passion to change popped up on my laptop screen. I feel incredible seeing many students have the same passion as me, but I’m a little bit shy talking to them. So, I sat silently enjoying the lecture.

Not so long that I realized, greeting people and introducing myself is the most important part of this workshop. Though, I realized it; It was too late and day one was wasted for me.

I promised myself to be prepared to talk with other students as much as I could. Fortunately, I did. I was surprised that many other students were shy as well. Knowing that boosted my confidence to interact with more people. It was a day that I can’t complain about spending 3 hours on. Aside from communication, I gathered a lot of information from the lecture — a good leader starts from you.

Knowing I did a phenomenal job on day two, I decided to keep up my momentum for day three. Though it was the last day, it was a pleasure seeing other shy students speak up and start communicating as well. Putting on a smile when communicating is a lesson I learned from day 3. Nonetheless, “lead with love and lead with passions” is another vital lesson I have learned.

Miserably, the workshop has ceased to end. It was emotional saying goodbye to those students and lecturers, not knowing when’s the next time we will meet. The workshop is extraordinary and I can’t think of a better way to spend that time. The workshop has ended but the mission hasn’t been completed. All participants were given 30 days of social challenges to make changes in their community or even their country.

I was thinking of making an impact on an issue that I have always been interested in — poverty. According to my ways of thinking, poverty is the main root of every other significant problem in this world. Without any hesitation, I wrote a poem addressing the life of those who live in poverty. I published it on my website hoping for people to reach and get emotional with it.

Here’s the poem:

Look at those wide eyes

Staring at the sky

With no tears left to cry.

Look at those skinny arms

With no muscular charm,

No protection from harm.

Look at the stomach protrude

Due to hunger

And lack of food,

Bleak and crude.

Day in day out I am always suffering

No permanent place to sleep

The mouth is always dry

Hunger, hunger my stomach complains

Garbage bins are the sources of my food

Clothes are dirty and old

When I cry out for help, no one comes to the rescue.

I walk barefooted

My teeth got no brush

My hair scuzzy

No toothpaste and soap

I use water from public toilets

My fellows go to school

Whilst I am busy walking in the center of the street

Finding temporary shelter

I am an orphan

I have no one to care for me

I don’t get knowledge

Due to poverty

Poverty is the main source of problems

Without poverty,

This will be a peaceful world

So please,

We demand you

PROTECT OUR CHILDREN!

I inherently can not mention it enough that this particular workshop thoroughly taught me a ton. I have always enjoyed the process of learning, but after participating in GSL, no words can describe my ambition to thrive for improvement. In the closure, I advocate for all students to step out of your comfort to discover your passion. As Roy T. Bennett once said, “It’s only after you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow and transform.”

Project Little Dream to a Massive Impact

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, Nelson Mandela.

Education is really important but the problem is rural schools don’t have access to those materials that can lead students to success. As an agent for change, this needs to be changed, I can’t let this problem continue.

By the word of CHANGE, there are 2 points that I did last year to impact my country. It may not be a big impact but for Cambodia to be a developed country is a stepping stone.

Project Little Dreams was an impact project of our alumni, Sreyneang Oun. The project name was straightforward, she is creating this project to give hopes and dreams to students in the rural area to become a change agent of Cambodia as the students of Liger Leadership Academy. To be specific, we have chosen to work with the old school our alumni studied at, called “Tnoat.” So, our mission is to create activities for classroom learning. We will introduce the student’s fun activities but yet educational. The one and only one vision for our project are “Make education more enjoyable, people think about change and build leaders in my community”.

The biggest goal for the project is to experiment with a project-based-learning style with those kids.

Today is the day that I have to come to class proudly, ready to work, and ready to change. The team and I work together in finding fun activities just to test them at the first stage. They are just kids between the ages of 8 and 12, we can’t be too serious with them, so those fun activities would help so much. “The best way to make children good is to make them happy”, Oscar Wilde. Plus, we’re bringing them some of our old books, and let’s see if those students are the bookworms.

A week passes by, we have gathered all the activities we compromise moreover start testing them with the students. It was fun visiting their school for the first time because I get to spend my wonderful time with kids which I don’t usually do. All went pretty well, they enjoyed the activities and, most importantly, they were so kind, friendly and showed us a great deal of respect as their teachers.

It’s just an attempt on them, said our mentor. I already know there’s more work to come but everything is possible as a change agent.

The time to work on our main project goal had come. Since we wanted to experiment with the project-based-learning style, we were thinking of an environmental workshop. It is not easy to think of what to include in the workshop but because of our determination and effort, we managed to make everything achievable. Poster teaching will be included in our workshop followed by more fun activities related to our theme, the environment.

What is poster teaching? Our team will create posters teaching the students about the cause and effect of climate change plus showing the heroes that have contributed to this huge issue surrounding the world.

So, for the activities, we have come up with a bunch of ideas such as umbrella roll play to represent the importance of trees, trivia games after they are done with the poster section, videos explaining trash bins, and last but not least is a creative art where kids get a chance to express their creativity through art.

It is a well-planned workshop by far without any obstacles and we are ready to convey all of our knowledge to them.

The second trip has come and as a change agent, I’m always ready to face any complication. Same as the first trip, the students’ attitude does not change. They show respect to us, I can say even more than their teacher. This is warm for me as their visitor. I wish to see more Cambodian show this same attitude.

The workshop has started and every single student at the school shows up to this event as they are ready to receive all the knowledge we conduct. We begin the workshop simply by dividing them into smaller groups. Each group has 15 minutes for activity including umbrella role play, trivia, watching educational videos, and poster teaching as we called, then they will rotate. We wanted to see their creativity, so we set it to 1 hour just only for the creative art section. I can see that everyone expresses their curiosity in trivia and educational videos. They seem to enjoy umbrella role-play activities so much because they get to play around with umbrellas. I was impressed so much by their creativity, they built a house out of cardboard and some drew many beautiful arts. Well, now I understand that “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, they tend to be so smart and ingenious but they never get a chance to display who they are to the world. This wants to make me cry knowing that they will have a bright future and I’m stepping one foot forward as a change agent.

The workshop is done and I’m tired but seeing those kids smile and joy made me proud. We spent our last hour with kids playing soccer, drawing, and many more. Remember when I said, let’s see if those students are bookworms? Yes they are, their teacher told us that they always go into the library before class starts to read. They seem to remember our names clearly which is impressive. I don’t expect them to still remember our names in the next few months but let’s hope they remember how we make them happy just like a quote says, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” It was a good time spending with those students. I wish to see them again soon.

Now that I have impacted others, have I done any impact on myself yet? Yes, I did a little but the biggest impact came during the quarantine.

Well, let’s see what COVID had done to me. To be honest, being in quarantine changed me so much. It’s like I’m a new person now. I discovered my new passion which is architecture. As of now, I like being productive during the day, such as working out, doing some reading, spending time thinking about life, meditation, and more related to health and studying. One thing that I’m proud of the most is that I played fewer games during this pandemic time. The majority would say they hate quarantine but I like it. It changed me so much as a person to guide me for a bright future.

You will succeed if you put in hard work and dedication.

“There is no chance, no destiny, no fate, that can hinder or control the firm resolve of a determination”. Start to change, make goals. Importantly do not procrastinate, it is always great to start early. But if you have no idea what to impact, just make somebody’s day, make them happy. Spreading information about important issues around the world through social media is also an impact you could start with. Just making someone happy is the easiest impact you can do.

The key to success starts during Quarantine

2020 has been a really tough time. Not gonna lie, but for me personally, 2020 started with electricity cut off at 11:58 pm, 31st of December, 2020. Like what? Why can’t I enjoy the celebration properly? Well, like my prediction that I have mentioned in one of the group chats, said “I know 2020 will be a bad year”, it is true. But why is 2020 such a terrible year?

Two thousand- twenty begun with the wildfire in Australia. Many species have gone extinct plus lots of animals such as Kangaroo and Koala died, then followed by WWIII between the U.S. and Iran. I’m not going to talk much about it because most of the audience already know what is really going on. There have been many more crises happening in 2020 such as: airplane crash in Pakistan, death of Kobe Bryant, earthquake in Turkey, volcano eruption in Philippines and lastly is the spread of  the virus, Covid-19, around the world.

Since Covid-19 spreads so quickly, the government in every country decided to close every school and establish lock down for safety measures. This pandemic’s lock-down has lasted around 4 to 5 months already and no one knows when it will end officially.

It has been a long time already since I don’t have school. Some people might wonder what did I do during this time? To be honest, I didn’t really do a lot of things in the first month. But by the second month of quarantine, I felt guilty for not doing anything. At the same time, I am addicted to watching life expert videos talking about the advantages of being productive. At this point, I want to learn some new skills. Graphic Design had come to my mind. I really like this new skill, so I have contacted Caro and talked a lot about someone that can mentor me to be a better graphic designer. She gave me many advice like watching YouTube videos because it would help and also she is willing to help me find a mentor by posting a status on her Facebook account. It ended up with tons of people wanting to help me. Puppy, who used to be our volunteer teacher, and Sushi, our  former facilitator, are two people of the many. I’ve talked to them a lot recently and I also created some graphic works. After a few weeks, I felt like graphic design isn’t my skill. After I found out about that, I chatted to Puppy about some random stuff. It turns out that she works as an architect. We spoke a lot about architecture and she gave me some tips and how to be a good architect. After the chat, I took her words really seriously because I was interested. I tried to watch lots of videos about architecture works while practicing sketching. Guess what? I love it. It must be my passion even though I don’t usually draw. I’ve done two to three sketches, some ideas and designs to a house/building, many room designing and decors.

These are the graphic work I’ve done:

Wait a minute, what about your school subjects? Haven’t heard me mentioning it? Don’t worry, I’ve also done tons of stuff related to those subjects too. I did some math exercises in Khan Academy’s online course. To be honest, during this lockdown, Math is the only subject I didn’t really work on much. I don’t know why too, but I just focus more on other priorities. For Khmer literacy, I’m not really productive on it either. I did not do anything much, I just read the pdf about the constitution of Cambodia that teacher Sokha assigned. Now talking about STEM, I did many things such as: Reading articles, researching, and mostly, observing birds. I saw many birds and some strange animals that I won’t be able to see if I’m not into STEM. Besides that, I am currently focusing on English Literacy. I did plenty of reading on Newsela, spending a lot of time on IXL to practice reading skills and improving my vocabulary. I’m not gonna forget about this, I’ve spent hundreds of hours on writing including this post that you are reading now. I don’t think these have kept me busy enough, so I’m planning to do more work related to Math and Khmer. I want it to be my most productive break ever. As time goes on, I am sure my productivity will increase.

As some of you might already know, I’ve been selected to be part of the LigerSat team. It is a really short time for us, as the junior, to prepare for when the senior graduates. Meaning that I will take an online class to understand more about the project and especially, learning about ham radio to take an exam for license inorder to use our ground station. It took us about three months to finish the book but unfortunately not everyone had passed the practice test yet (it is just similar to the actual exam but it’s not going to be graded). Hopefully, all five will pass the exam when we take the official one. It is not ending here, after finishing the book, we have one more class with Josh Umansky (LigerSat mentor), about arduino. We learned to connect the wire, function of each component and coding the arduino to work. It is a pleasure to learn with Josh. It is also fun when we practice with the website, but it might be really harmful if we do it in real life without knowing the concept. To be continued, we will also have another class with our newest mentor named Giovanni. I’m not a hundred percent sure about the concept he will teach us yet but I know it is going to be fun.

The Ham Radio License book:

Beside all of the learning stuff, I also spent most of my day on video games and social media. Not gonna lie, quarantine had changed me so much and mostly my behaviour. Since I’ve been to Liger, I don’t really go out instead just chilling in my room. These 3 months got me so much experience in life. I went out to visit my friends but I won’t forget about wearing face masks and washing my hands before and after going out. Of course I spent most of the time playing with my younger cousins. I also helped my grandpa and uncle with their jobs. I think from now on I use my time more conveniently compared to me just chilling in my room all day long.

In conclusion, I am supremely thankful for quarantine for shaping me to be a better person and change agent. I’m so surprised that I found 3 new passions in just four months. I’m also glad that I can be a great family member again after 4 years. Nevertheless, this isn’t a great time for many people to enjoy their life because of the virus that is spreading around the world. Lastly, I just want to give a clearer explanation about what I had mentioned earlier. It is never too late to change and also think that time is valuable, if you have time, use it wisely. A week or two can change your life forever.

Hard work will get paid with good results

Animals are the important topic people need to learn and think about. So, which means Liger Leadership Academy integrates this subject into our curriculum of study. To be really specific about wildlife, at first we concentrate on just invertebrate species. To those that don’t know what an invertebrate animal is, it is essentially the sort of animal that has no backbone, or those animals with bony skeletons. Those animal groups are, Sponges, Cnidarians, Flatworms, Roundworms, Mollusks, Annelids, Insects, Arthropods, Echinoderms and Chordate Invertebrates. Most invertebrate species are some type of Jelly-like and snail. For real, I don’t know that insects have no backbone before learning about this subject, and I can say that this is the knowledge I will never forget about in my life. I don’t really understand much of this concept, to be honest. For me, this is a challenging subject, because I am not really into science. But I’m still trying my best to concentrate on the quiz at the end of the round, and especially get a good score. For the facts, I know only that the Cow is in the Chordate, that Tapeworm is in the Platyhelminthes, that Sea Urchin is in the Echinoderm and that there are more just animals in their families. But hard work will get paid with good results, finally I got 29/30 on the test even though I don’t understand much in class. Lastly I want to say that try to learn things that you aren’t good at or interested in. This way it is better for your future.  I suggest that you do anything to determine your favorite topic or dream work.

Starting new Journey with Coding!

Round 3 is just like any other round but exploration change. I have started my experience with coding. I don’t like coding that much but I chose to challenge myself. I start my coding experience but it ain’t for the beginner, instead of in my opinion I think my journey starts with advanced coding.

My project called PechSG which is a saving group for the Liger community. My team and I will need to code an application that is similar to the bank account application but just for the Liger community which leads by Vuthy Vey ( Senior cohort student ). This is not an easy task to do while I am the only one in the class who never experience coding. We have seven weeks to complete the task but my first 2 weeks for used to for my teammate to explain and teach me how coding works. Three weeks had passed, our facilitator wanted us to divide task which has 3 groups. First is the one who designs how the app will look like and code the entire app. Second is coding the database for the admin of the group who uses our application. Last but not least is the Manager. The manager will control and talk to people to get more experience so we would have more ideas about how we will be. I chose to join the coding database with one of my partners. It is so hard at the beginning but once I pass a few tasks, I found out that coding is not that hard as I used to think. One fun fact is that I don’t usually code. I just clone other people’s code and change something but it still hard at first because it is not my own code so I can’t really find code that fits with the page where I want to change anything.

In conclusion, I believe that challenge yourself into any project that you don’t feel comfortable with is actually will make you feel more comfortable after you challenge yourself for a few weeks. Also after this project is done, I pledge to myself to join more projects that I would never think I will join.

This is a picture that show what I have done so far in the past few week:

How Cambodia can be Change?

                  How I Change Cambodia

Time is moving, People still thinking. Most of people don’t know what their plan for their future when they graduate from school and some don’t even know how will they help Cambodia due to one of the low economy countries. Technology is the main thing to help the economy grow. Due to that Marine Conservation is also one of the problems that Cambodia facing now.  I’m not so confident in talking about marine but I want to share and show people the problem about marine in Cambodia. In order to change or find a solution to any problem, we should understand the problem clearly first.

Technology

The year of 2019 at Liger Leadership Academy, our students have used more technology on our school studies and we have noticed that since we use more of technology on our school work and homework, we have improved so much better and all of the students turn in their work on time on our study than when we just study using the only book. This means that technology has improved us so much that we can’t expect it to be but I wonder why some of the people still think that using technology destroyed the communication of people and I also respect the idea of why but if we use technology correctly on study work those things won’t happen unless people use it in the wrong way that it has created for us. Also, things on earth are not perfect, human does. Singapore is just a small country but their economy going so well compared to other big countries and a huge amount of population. And in their economy, they use technology to help a lot. Meaning that technology involved so much in the Singapore economy to help their country did well on the Economy. To add on, Technology in Cambodia is very low and not many people know how technology work and how to use it. I suggest to the government to include technology in the government school in the future and it would be better if they start it now. Technology has played a big role in developing but people don’t know about it and complain that it’s destroying people’s mindsets. Because most of the people only know that using technology is just using phone or PC as they did daily. I hope in the future Cambodia will grow as high as other countries in Asia too.

Marine Conservation

Liger Leadership Academy wanted all of their students to make changes for Cambodia. Liger had found many problems that Cambodia is facing now to let the students find a solution to those problems. So, Marine Theater had added as an Exploration. Marine Theatre is an exploration that combines both Marine and Plays together. In the exploration, we learned about Marine and the problem that our Ocean facing now in Cambodia. Then we turned what we had learned about Marine into a play to show people live in a coastal community. I’m glad that I had joined Marine exploration because I want to see all of the beautiful creatures underwater world such as Coral reef, Dolphin, Seahorse and more. But those expectations let me down. There’s not much more colorful coral reef, not much Dolphin still has in Cambodia and we can’t find a lot of Seahorse anymore. Because of Plastic pollution, illegal fishing and more than doing against law. Those things let my expectations down, but I want to change it to let people see it again and me either. Plastic pollution is not only happening in Cambodia but Oceans are connected, what we are doing to the Ocean it’s causing problems to the whole entire world. So, if you throw plastic into the ocean the plastic won’t go anywhere far from other country’s coast or another big issue is Sea Turtle will eat the plastic because they confuse it was jellyfish. After that, the plastic will be stuck in their lungs forever because plastic won’t break down until 1000 years and sea turtle can only live for 15 to 50 years. Illegal fishing is also one part of destroying our ocean. There are many habitats underwater for many different species to live such as seagrass, coral reef and more, also these habitats not only for different species to live but it’s also decorating our ocean to look prettier and colorful. Trawling is one of the illegal fishing types. When they go and trawl, their net not only catches the things that they need like some types of fish but the net catch everything that it touches. Seagrass and coral get destroyed by trawling mostly. Not only those habitats being destroyed by trawling, but also endangered species like dolphins, seahorse and some type of shark. Our ocean is being destroyed is one part of the problem but doing illegal fishing affects the local fisherman. Local fisherman won’t last with their job anymore if illegal fishing still happen. There’s no more fish in the shallow water for local fishermen to fish because people who are doing illegal fishing catch all the fish. By talking about this, I’m not pointing the finger to people who are doing illegal fishing to stop but I recommend them to just doing normal fishing like a local fisherman to make our ocean still alive. These are the problems that lead our Liger team to create plays and show to the people that live in a coastal community and learn how those problems affect our beautiful ocean and change it.

Finally, it has come to the conclusion of this essay and I hope you like it and know how changing the country works. These two changes are just a small change for my country but if I don’t start it, so who will do it. Also if I make a small change and you participate with me to change to another small part then we can make a big change there. I make a small change, you make a small change and the world make another small change, our world will be better. Be the first change agent to influence the world. Lastly, this essay wants you to understand the problem that happens in common and change it. Thank you.

Trip to S’ang

On 12th, September 2019 our group went to Saang district to learn and get to know more about chemical fertilizer. Before we arrive there, our goal for visiting there is to learn and compare the difference between chemical fertilizer and organic fertilizer also we want to know the thought from the farmer about using chemicals. My expectation for the trip is to see how vegetables grow in a chemical way.

Trip to Saang is one of the strange trips for us because our project to learn about the household garden which is planting using organic fertilizer, but for this trip, we also want to observe about the chemical. Learning from just a side we can’t make any thought out of it because we do not know from another side perspective. In the trip to Saang, I have learned so many things about the chemical that I could not talk about all of it. One of the things that I learned is that they only eat the vegetables that they grow in front of their house which is called household garden and it is organic, and the garden that they use chemical is a big farm where they grow many different plants and vegetables and they only sell it to the market in Phnom Penh. I can say that they are very smart and at the same time they only think about their own profits. They know that chemical is not good for the health and also they do not eat what they grow. They grow chemical just to sell to the market where all of our people go and buy there. Another piece that I have learned at Saang is that they prepare the land just like organic planting does. They mentioned that chemical fertilizer is just helping the plant to grow faster, bigger and also look fresh and there are many types of chemical fertilizer and I can tell one of them is to make the stem stunt so that there will be more stem grow to the side and not growing taller. After I went to Saang, my mindset has changed. I can not believe how much they get profit for those chemical vegetables per round. They can get double how much they spend per round and even triple if the vegetables per kg go even higher than normal. Also, my mindset changes and do not want to eat vegetables anymore after knowing how many chemicals they use in vegetables.

At the end from just this one trip, I have learned tons of things from chemicals. There are also tons of type of chemical and also of them have a different function to do with plants. Some help to make plants green, some help plants to grow bigger, some make stem stunt and some more help plant to look scorch so that people think it is organic. My prediction in the future, I think that those people won’t stop growing chemically because they want to compete with each other, so if only one people still doing it, everyone in that community will do it too. I think that in the future people will change their mindset to organic by buying all of the vegetables at the supermarket but still, those people won’t stop growing chemical.

Negative Number is still Important

People mostly use a positive number as their daily use every day. Negative number not being treated as well as a positive number because the Negative number can only use several things. Some people almost forget about the negative number because people think that a negative number is not important at all. A negative number has its own unique and different use for daily life. It’s also important for some uses.

On the number line, a positive number counted to the right of 0 and the negative number counted to the left. But 0 is in the middle does not represent a positive number or a negative number. It depends on the use of it.

The Importance of Negative number

The negative number had played a big role in many purposes but people did not recognize it. The negative number used to describe Temperature like -0 degrees Celsius. Also, it’s used to measure distant like sea level.

Study about negative number helps us to improve on math, especially Positive number.

Independent Learning helps Improve our Leadership Skills

Literacy class in round 5, we have started a new theme. The new theme is making the most of your learning, meaning that all students have to make their most in class. For this theme, we are focusing on doing independent work to make students know how to plan their learning better. Example: We all have a sheet of schedule to plan what they are going to do for the day. Do not think that this theme useless or unknowledgeable. Since the day we start this theme our work gets done faster and better because we have more time to do it. But in my opinion, this theme can only include for 1 round each every year, no more than that. Because students won’t be able to learn new stuff if they only do independent work. I love this method because it not only helps us improve our learning skills or turn in work faster, it’s also helping our students to improve leadership skills like integrity and determination.
